Hello! How can we help you?

Can I take the Veloped into the sea?

Short answer: use the Veloped on the beach, but do not walk it into the sea. Salt water destroys the ball bearings in the wheels.

Why salt water is the problem — not the frame

The aluminium frame of the Veloped copes perfectly well with sand, rain and spray. The vulnerable parts are the sealed ball bearings in the wheel hubs and in the front fork headsets, together with the brake units and cables. Once salt water has passed a bearing seal it stays inside. The water dries out; the salt does not. It keeps attracting moisture and attacks the polished steel races, so the bearing first turns rough and noisy and eventually seizes.

"It is only for a moment, and I will rinse it in the evening"

Rinsing the Veloped with fresh water after a day at the beach is exactly the right thing to do, and we recommend it. But it does not undo a dip in the sea. A rinse only reaches the outside of the bearing — the salt water that already got past the seal is sealed in, and no amount of hosing down will flush it back out. A few seconds in the water is enough to do the damage. That is why the rule is simple: down to the water's edge, not into it.

How to use the Veloped at the beach

  • Roll across dry sand, shingle and dunes right down to the waterline — that is what the large pneumatic wheels are made for.
  • Park it on dry sand, above the wet line and out of reach of the waves.
  • Never use the Veloped as support for walking into the water. It is not designed to be submerged, and wet stones or a shelving seabed make it unstable.
  • Afterwards, brush off the dry sand and rinse the frame and wheels with fresh water, then let it dry. Avoid aiming a high-pressure jet directly at the hubs, headsets or brakes.
  • Check before the next walk that both brakes still run smoothly.

Getting into the water itself

For the last few metres into the sea you need equipment built to be submerged. Trionic does not make one. Many holiday and resort beaches — including on the Adriatic — keep amphibious beach wheelchairs available free of charge; the beach operator or the local tourist office can tell you whether your beach has one. The Veloped takes you comfortably from the car park to the water's edge; the beach chair takes over from there.

Seized bearings after immersion in salt water can be replaced, but it is an avoidable repair — and one holiday is enough to cause it.
